BMW 1 Series Preview

Now that Mercedes-Benz has launched the B-Class in India and also confirmed its plans to roll-out the A-Class here, BMW has announced the plans to bring the 1-Series hatchback to India. At the launch of the new facelift X6 in New Delhi, BMW India president confirmed that the smallest car in the BMW range will come to India by mid-2013.
The 1-Series hatchback is available in both petrol and diesel guise and is based on the new 3-Series platform. It is available in both three-door and five-door variants, but only the latter one is expected to arrive here. The 1-Series (F20) 116i and 118i gets a 1.6-litre petrol engine developing 136bhp and 170bhp respectively.
The diesel engine displaces 2.0 litres and produces 116bhp, 143bhp and 184bhp depending upon the variants. The 1-Series is loaded with features from the segment above, it gets parking assist, lane departure and collision warning, cruise control, smart phone and music player integration with Facebook and Twitter apps,OptionaliDrive and BMW ConnectedDrive. It remains to be seen how many of those features make it to the Indian market.
At the time of the launch around June 2013 the 1-Series will come to India as a CBU (Completely Built Unit); however, the CKD operations will begin by end of 2013 at the company’s Chennai facility. This will be the least expensive BMW in India – the starting price of this model will be around Rs 2 lakh cheaper than the X1 crossover and in direct competition with the A-Class.

Tata Indigo eCS CNG

Expected Launch: August 2013
Expected Price: ₹ 5.50 - 5.80 lakhs
Tata Indigo eCS CNG is not launched in India yet. Information on this page is tentative.

Tata Indigo eCS CNG Preview

Tata launched the 2013 model range of the Indica eV2, IndigoeCS, Nano and Tata Sumo under their new customer focused strategy Horizonext. At the same event the company also unveiled the e-max CNG variants of the Indica, Indigo and Nano – confirming that the new versions will be launched over the next few months.

Tata will first launch the Indigo CNG facelift in August. The CNG variant of the sub-four meter sedan will incorporate all the features of the facelifted model. The CNG Indigo eCS CNG is based on the petrol model and is powered by the same 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine delivering 65bhp and 100Nm of torque. Running on CNG the same engine produces 56bhp and 90Nm of torque.

The cosmetic changes to the car include blacked-out headlamps, refreshed front bumper, new grille and extra bits of chrome to both front and rear. The additional features on the new version include electronically adjustable ORVMs and dual tone interiors. Tata has significantly improved the quality of the gear shifts, which has always been a complaint issue for the Indica and Indigo twins. Like most diesel cars, the Indigo eCS CNG occupies majority of the boot space – there is just about enough room for two travel bags.

We expect Tata to offer CNG option on both GLX and GVX trims. The prices of the CNG versions will be around Rs 50,000 higher than that of the standard variant.

Audi Q3 S (2WD) Launched 19 August 2013

Expected Price: ₹ 25.00 - 29.00 lakhs
Audi Q3 S (2WD) is not launched in India yet. Information on this page is tentative.

Audi Q3 S (2WD) Preview

Audi had launched Q3, the compact crossover, in 2012 and since then it has been their highest selling vehicle with around 1850 units sold. The Q3 is offered with the 2.0 TFSI Petrol engine and the 2.0-litre TDI Diesel engine options. The former produces 208PS and 300Nm of torque, while the oil burner produces 174PS and 380Nm of torque. Both engines are offered with the famed Audi four-wheel-drive ‘Quattro’ as a standard fitment over the range.

However, the Q3 sales have now dipped with change in taxes for CBU cars – the Q3 is no longer the entry-level model in Audi India’s range. Also with Mercedes launching both the A-class and B-class with diesel engines and the BMW 1-series launch nearing, the luxury car market is getting hotter at the lower end, thus creating the need for an even cheaper variant of the Q3.
Audi is already offering a base version of the Q3 with minimal features to keep the price of their smallest SUV in check but even this is significantly on the higher side due to the Q3 being a CBU. Recently, a test mule of the Audi Q3 was spotted sans the Quattro badge and this may be Audi’s attempt to make the Q3 more affordable by offering it in the two-wheel-drive guise.

Our inside sources confirm that Audis is indeed looking to launch a two-wheel-drive version of the Q3, which will be called the Q3 S. It is also likely that the German car maker may this version at its Aurangbad Plant from CKD kits in a bid to further bring down the price. With this 2WD variant being added to the line-up, Audi will target the BMW X1, its closest competitor.

The 2WD drive option is expected to be available only with the lower trims of the Q3 with the Quattro featuring with the top spec cars. The entry-level variant will be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine with power output of close to 150bhp and 280Nm. The power will be delivered to front-wheels via six-speed manual gearbox.
We expect that the 2WD Q3 to be price around Rs 28 lakh to compete with the Mercdes-Benz B-Class and BMW X1. This stripped-down budget variant is expected to be launched in August 2013.

Skoda Octavia 2013

Expected Launch: October 2013
Expected Price: ₹ 14.00 - 18.50 lakhs
Skoda Octavia is not launched in India yet. Information on this page is tentative.

Skoda Octavia Preview

Skoda recently launched the 2013 Octavia globally. This third generation model has been completely re-designed both inside, outside and has drawn inspiration from the Vision D concept. The new car from Czech manufacturer has a seeming resemblance to the 2013 European spec Skoda Rapide that is based on the same design philosophy. We won’t get the Europe spec Rapid anytime soon, but the D-Segment Octavia is due for launch this October.

Skoda has moved towards softer lines and more rounded edges to give the Octavia a classier, premium and more modern feel. It has become longer (up from 4.5 meters to 4.6 meters) and wider (up from 1.7 to 1.8 meters) and the wheelbase has gone up by 108mm.This means that interior cabin space has been increased significantly. Also the increased wheelbase means better handling and also improved for the passengers.

However, despite the significant increase in all around proportions the new car is 102kg lighter thanks to parent company Volkswagen’s MQB platform. This will be the same platform that is expected to underpin a host of future models from the German automaker’s stables – including the India-bound next generation Jetta, Superb and Passat.

In front, the Octavia gets the new Skoda grille which will grace all future models from the Czech automaker. Among the revisions, most significant are the new headlights and tail lamps. The base model has been fitted with halogens up front and normal lights at the back. The top-end variant on the other hand gets bi-Xenon with day-time LED running lights in front and full LED lights for the tail lamp cluster. However, the good news is that Skoda seems to have retained its signature ‘C’ shaped tail lights in both trims.

On the sides, the car is pretty similar to its predecessor save for sharper lines and slightly flared wheel arches. The wheels too have been revised and now feature a sharper design, almost similar to those found on some of the newer VW sedan cars.

Hyundai Grand i10 | Launch 3 September 2013

Expected Launch: 3 September 2013
Expected Price: ₹ 4.70 - 7.00 lakhs
Hyundai Grand i10 (BA) is not launched in India yet. Information on this page is tentative.
Hyundai has unveiled the next generation hatchback for India, christened as the Grand i10. The new model will be built in India and will also be exported to the European markets, where it is expected to debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. Hyundai has released the first images of the car along with a confirmation that this model will be powered by a new diesel engine.
The all-new Grand i10 follows Hyundai’s fluidic design philosophy. The front of the car is dominated by a standard hexagonal grille and well sculpted headlamps that resemble the design of the i20. The fog lamps are big with bold black surrounds adding more aggression to the fascia. The Grand resembles the current i10 from the side, but it is noticeably wider, longer and taller than the current model. This car has side moldings – but these are not standard puny strips, but shapely wide black belts that add character to the car along with roof rails. The rear of the car looks like a shrunk version of the i20 and the overall design makes it evident that the car will slot in between the i10 and the i20.
Hyundai is known for offering segment-first features and the Grand i10 will be no different. The top-end variants will get climate control, rear parking sensors and even sun roof. The most interesting addition however is the rear AC vents, which is not a standard feature even on the i20. The overall increase in dimensions means that the new Grand i10 will be more spacious that the current model. It will comfortably seat three people on the rear-bench and still have space in the boot for week’s shopping.
The next generation i10 will be powered by 1.2-litre four-cylinder kappa petrol engine developing 80bhp and 112Nm. Hyundai will surely update the engine a bit for better efficiency and lesser emissions. But the bigger news is the diesel engine. Hyundai is introducing a new 1.1-litre three-cylinder engine that will produce close to 75bhp. The same engine with even lower emission figures will power the new i10 for Europe. We are also waiting for the efficiency numbers of the new car, but we won’t be surprised if the official ARAI numbers are well above 20kpl. The exact specs of the diesel engine will be disclosed at the time of launch in September. The Grand i10 will be the third car in the segment after the Chevrolet Beat and the Ford Figoto a have diesel engine option.
We now have confirmation that this car will be positioned between the i10 and the i20 in India – this is also the reason it will be called the Grand i10.The next generation Grand i10 will be priced starting close to Rs 4.6 lakh, while the top-end variant diesel variant close to Rs 7 lakh. It will be interesting to see if the new car cannibalizes the existing Hyundai hatchbacks. Of the possible remedies is that Hyundai will discontinue the Santro and cut prices of the current i10 to make place for this new model. However all the pricing details are just speculations, so stay tuned to CarWale for more details of the Grand i10 from the launch event in September.

Honda CB Trigger premium 150cc bike Launched

Honda's latest 150cc offering, the CB Trigger, comes with Combi Brake System (CBS) as an option and commands a starting price tag of Rs 67,384 (ex-showroom Delhi)

The Honda CB Trigger 150cc bike, which was unveiled last month (Honda CB Trigger unveiled), is now available at a price of Rs 67,384 (ex-showroom Delhi). Pricing of the bike is slightly steeper in Mumbai and starts at Rs 72,431 (ex-showroom Mumbai). This is the fourth launch in the 150cc segment by the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer after the CB Unicorn, Dazzler and CBR150R. The latest offering is powered by a 150cc, four-stroke mill capable of pushing out 14.14PS @ 8,500rpm and boasts a torque figure of 12.5Nm @ 6,500rpm. Visually the new bike looks like a beefed-up version of CB Twister with some design elements influenced from the Dazzler.

The CB trigger is the first bike in the country to have Combi Brake System (CBS) as an option. The CBS applies both the brakes simultaneously which aids stability under hard braking and reduces braking by as much as 32 per cent. Yamaha Ray Z Launched

Building further momentum on its well-received Ray scooter that was targeted at women, the Japanese bike maker has now introduced a more male centric model called the Ray Z priced at Rs 48,555 (ex-showroom Delhi). Also adding to its existing 150cc SZ-R motorcycle range are two new variants, the SZ-S and the SZ-RR priced at Rs 59,500 and Rs 62,500 respectively

Believe it or not, Yamaha has in fact sold 70,000 scooters since the launch of the Ray, which accounts for 16 percent of the market share. Those are some impressive numbers considering the scooter was built solely for a female audience, which prior to the entry of the Ray was a rather undernourished segment.

As expected, Yamaha had something up their sleeve for the opposite sex as well and here’s proof of that. It is simply called the “Ray Z” and will distinguish it’s more masculine appeal with exterior shades that include a combination of red and black, white and black and even an all black version.

With weight and power figures identical to the Ray, the Ray Z will cost you a little more than the Ray at Rs 48,555 (ex-showroom Delhi), but a claimed mileage of 53 kmpl should even things out nicely.

The new Ray Z while keeping the same basic performance of the Ray released in September 2012 has a more sporty look and feel in comparison which is made evident through a smoked-finish visor, an aluminum rear wing-shaped tandem rider grab-bars, a new instrument panel and carbon fibre patterned seat cover material. Yamaha has also launched a string of accessories and riding gear to compliment the Ray Z

Honda Activa-i launched at Rs 44,200

A price war has been activated in the 110cc scooter segment with Honda launching the cheapest version of its bestselling Activa scooter

Honda has been a pioneer of sorts in the automatic scooter segment with the Activa being a runaway hit since launch, and later the Dio and Aviator further building on its success. Currently, Honda reigns over 50 per cent of the scooter segment sales and aims to be the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the country by 2015. In a bid to achieve this target, Honda has released the most affordable scooter in its line-up called the Activa-i, priced at Rs 44,200 (ex-showroom Delhi) which is Rs 5000 cheaper than the regular Activa.

The new scooter uses the same air-cooled, 109cc mill as in the Activa and produces 8.15PS @ 7,500rpm and torque figure of 8.74Nm @ 5,500rpm. It also gets almost all the features as in the regular Activa such as Combi Brake System (CBS) which reduces braking distance by 24 per cent compared to conventional brakes, tubeless tyres, maintenance free battery and viscous air filter. The Activa-i claims to deliver 60kmpl thanks to Honda Eco Technology (HET) that the engine employs. Also Read: Honda Activa HET Road Test

The Activa-i boasts an underseat storage capacity of 18-litre, a slightly higher ground clearance of 165mm (compared to the Activa’s 153mm) and tips the scale at 103kg. Also, it uses an ergonomic grab rail that helps in putting the scooter on main stand with 15 per cent less force which should be a boon for women riders. Visually, the new scooter has design influences of the Aviator in front but the new indicators give the scooter a distinct identity. The rear gets an all-new tail lamp and a subtly molded exhaust.

Honda Dream Yuga gets a HET heart

The already super efficient Honda Dream Yuga will now deliver more miles to a litre of fuel thanks to the revolutionary Honda Eco Technology mill

After an overwhelming response to the recently introduced Honda Eco Technology (HET) in its scooters, Honda has now introduced the same in its 110cc Dream Yuga. The new 2013 edition of the Dream Yuga will now be even more fuel efficient and return 74kmpl as opposed to its earlier 72kmpl. Related: Honda Active HET Road Test

Despite the value addition in the Dream Yuga, there will be no change in the pricing of the motorcycle, which will continue to be sold for Rs 45,101 (ex-showroom Delhi).

The Dream Yuga is available in three variants – Kick/Drums/Spoke, Kick/ Drum/Alloy and Self/Drum/Alloy and five colour options: Black, Monsoon Grey Metallic, Alpha Red Metallic, Force Silver Metallic and Maple Brown Metallic.

Honda has been going strong in the 110cc segment with more than 3 lakh units of the Dream Yuga sold nationwide since its launch in May 2012 and with the introduction of HET, the winged brand will be hoping to boost sales further.

KTM 390 Duke launched at Rs 1.80 lakh

One of the most awaited motorcycles in the country, the KTM 390 Duke, can be all yours at an incredible price tag of Rs 1.80 lakh (ex-Showroom Delhi). Bookings to commence from June 26, 2013

It’s finally here! The eagerly anticipated bike from Austrian off-road motorcycle specialist KTM, the 390 Duke, has been launched. Its younger sibling the 200 Duke arrived in India early last year and really set the benchmark of just how much fun a high-performance small-capacity single-cylinder motorcycle can be. Aimed at addressing the vacant space between the 200cc and the 600cc segment, the 390 Duke seeks to take the 200’s madness a little further. And this isn’t just a bike for India mind you – KTM, along with Bajaj, has designed this new motorcycle to sell across all of KTM’s international markets (about 80-odd countries) much like its smaller capacity 200cc sibling. Related: KTM 390 Duke Special Coverage

Stylistically, not much has changed from the 200 Duke. The 390 uses pretty much the same chassis and cycle parts but to set itself apart, features a white colour scheme on the tank panels along with the trellis frame and wheels powder coated in customary KTM orange. The choice of colours really does help the 390 distinguish itself but the bike’s real piece-de-resistance is its 375cc single-cylinder engine which puts out a whopping 45PS of power and 35Nm of torque. As it keeps most of the external components same as the 200 Duke, the 390 Duke is able to weigh in at a fairly featherweight 145kg. Combine that mad power output and the low kerb weight, and you’ve got some serious performance on your hands.

Taller gearing as compared to that of the 200’s, ensures that the 390 Duke doesn’t run out of steam well until the 170km/h mark and can do triple digit cruising speeds all day long without even so much as breaking a sweat. At both ends, the 390 sports high quality Metzeler Sportec M5 Interact rubber for exceptional traction. And combined the brilliant tyres with the Bosch developed 9MB Two Channel ABS (which can be disengaged at will), coming as standard fitment, the equipment level on the KTM 390 Duke is truly in sync with the company’s Ready to Race principle.

Priced at Rs 1.80 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the 390 Duke is all set to take the Indian enthusiast motorcycling scene to a whole new level. Keep looking at this space for the full road test of this mental orange machine when we get our hands on it in the near future.

Bajaj Discover 125T launched at Rs 52,500

The Discover 125T is a toned down version of the 125ST and has been priced at Rs 52,500 (ex-showroom Delhi)

With the motive of expanding its Discover portfolio, Bajaj Auto has launched a lower spec variant of its Discover 125ST motorcycle. The new bike, which will simply carry the 125T moniker, is a stripped down version of the Discover 125ST, which was launched exactly a year ago. The key difference between the new bike and the ST is the lack of a mono-suspension, which Bajaj has replaced with the standard gas filled twin shockers at the bike's rear. Visually also the rear suspension set-up is the only distinguishing factor between them.

The boffins at Bajaj have also tinkered with the 125T on the mechanical front as the 124.6cc, 4-valve mill now produces 12.5PS @ 9,000rpm and 10.8Nm @ 6,000rpm, which is a difference of 0.5PS between the two bikes, whereas the torque figure remains same, but peak torque is reached 500rpm quicker on the 125T.

The Chakan based two-wheeler manufacturer hasn’t fiddled with the bike's transmission as it sports the same 5-speed gearbox akin to the 125ST.  All these modifications have been done with the intention of improving overall fuel efficiency of the mid-variant 125cc bike. How much of a difference it has really made can be gauged once we do a proper test of the bike, as the 125ST had a tested overall efficiency figure of 66kmpl.

Also the new bike would be available in two variants unlike the 125ST, which was offered only in one standard variant. The Discover 125T with drum brakes at the front and rear has been priced at Rs 52,500 whereas the disc brake version would sport a price tag of Rs 55,500, both prices are ex-showroom Delhi. When one compares the disc version of the Discover 125T and ST, the monetary difference  among them stands at just Rs 526 and personally we feel the 125ST makes more sense since one gets the benefit of a mono-shock for a fraction of price difference.

With the Discover 125T Bajaj would be hoping to boost its sales as it now has a product which can directly compete with its core rivals Honda’s Shine and Hero MotoCorp’s Super Splendor since the Discover 125ST was more of a performance 125cc commuter and competed with Honda’s Stunner and Hero’s Ignitor.

Mahindra Centuro at Rs.45,000 launched 2013

Mahindra has just launched the new Centuro which marks its entry into the premium 110cc commuter segment

The 110 cc commuter segment has just received an all-new entry with Mahindra launching the Centuro. Slotted above the recently launched Pantero, the Centuro aims to woo buyers with a host of features which have never been experienced on a production motorcycle. The Centuro is protected against theft by a Central Locking Anti Theft System with Engine Immobiliser and a Remote 96-bit encrypted Flip Key, a first in Indian motorcycling that gives unique secure access to the motorcycle. There is also the Find-Me Lamps that help to easily locate the motorcycle even in a crowded parking lot while Guide Lamps continue to illuminate even as you walk away after parking the bike to light up the way for you.

Apart from the list of features, the Centuro sports an extremely competent 110 cc MCi-5 engine which puts out 8.5 bhp @ 7500rpm and 8.5Nm @ 5500rpm and aims to offer best-in-class acceleration but also best in class efficiency. The bike also sports a fully digital console with an in-built, programmed Service Indicator and Distance- to-Empty Fuel calculator which make sure you are never left stranded (Read : Mahindra Centuro First Ride).

At Rs. 45,000, the Centuro is all set to go up against the Hero Passion Pro which starts at Rs. 45,850 for the spoke/kick Variant and the Honda Dream Yuga with starts at Rs. 45,101. Considering all the features the Centuro packs in, it definitely offers the most value here and in case you are amongst the first 10,000 to book it, you get the bike at an even more attractive Rs. 44,000 price tag. Now we already liked the bike during its first ride in the Himalayas and this attractive price tag is just the icing on the cake. Mahindra is definitely looking good to establish itself as a major two wheeler manufacturer and the Centuro looks like a start of good things from Mahindra.

Honda CBR250R Launched 2013

Refreshed CBR250R comes in 4 new paint schemes including the iconic Repsol racing livery

Honda has fired a swift response to the KTM 390 Duke, launched just two days ago, by introducing the 2013 edition of CBR 250R bike. The updates, though, are merely cosmetic and the new CBR250R is now available in 4 new colours – Sports Red, Black, Pearl Sunbeam White and the hottest and priciest of the lot – the iconic Repsol racing livery that also adorns the RC213V MotoGP bike. Also Read: KTM 390 Duke launched at Rs 1.80 lakh

Honda has cleverly kept the Repsol edition a limited one, putting it on sale only till October 2013 and that too in C-ABS variant. C-ABS, for the uninitiated, stands for Combined Anti-lock Braking System which essentially adds more bite to the bike’s braking capabilities. Other standout features on the new CBR250R include blacked-out alloys and exhaust heat shield. The Repsol edition, however, gets orange alloys. As aforementioned, there are no changes to the mechanicals and the CBR250R will continue to be powered by the same reliable 250cc, 26PS mill as on the outgoing model.

The new bikes will be available across all Honda dealerships by the end of the month and as per prices below. The question that comes to mind now is whether the changes to the CBR250R are enough to combat the KTM 390 Duke, which is all new, offers better performance, and comes with a whole lot of customisation options aside from being cheaper as well at Rs 1.80 lakh?

Standard C-ABS (ex-showroom, Delhi)

Sports Red Rs. 1.56 lakh 1.85 lakh
Black Rs. 1.56 lakh 1.85 lakh
Pearl Sunbeam White Rs 1.57 lakh Rs 1.86 lakh

New Vespa VX Launched at Rs 71, 380

Piaggio brings in the new VX variant of the Vespa with vibrant colours and added features at Rs 71,380 (ex-showroom Delhi)

Following the success of the Vespa, Bollywood actor Siddharth Malhotra and Vanya Mishra, winner of 2012 Femina Miss India, took the wraps off the new Vespa VX. Specially developed for the Indian market, the new Vespa VX now comes in two additional colours -- Vibrante Rosa (dual tone red and pink) & Portovenere Green (metallic green). Aside from the colours, the VX also sports a 200mm front disc brake, a new speedometer and MRF Zapper tubeless tyres. The handle bars of the new Vespa have been raised for better grip and comfort. The new models also get an optional beige seat to add to the Vespa’s style and a larger grab rail.

Speaking on the occasion, Ravi Chopra, Chairman and managing Director, Piaggio Vehicles (India) said, “Piaggio is delighted to present the Vespa VX to cater to a surging demand amongst the discerning Indian consumer. We hope to further strengthen the premium segment with the Vespa VX, offering the Indian youth that lifestyle stature they wish to be associated with. The new features not only offer a better riding experience, it brings the aspirational Indian a step closer to the Vespa universe.”

The safer and chicer Vespa VX is now on sale at a price of Rs 71,380 (ex-showroom Delhi) which is nearly Rs 11, 000 over the price tag of the base variant Vespa LX. Although the difference in price may sound steep, the VX variant with the added features is definitely worth the extra sum. Also Read: Vespa VX125 : First Ride
